Past SMI Earth Day Initiatives
Story Money Impact first launched our Earth Day initiative back in 2022, spotlighting one Canadian documentary film each year that addresses an issue relevant to collective climate stewardship.
Since then, our campaigns have resulted in over 1,400 screenings hosted through DIY community engagement. Screening hosts have included businesses, schools, universities, individuals, families and groups of friends, environmental non-profits, other non-profits, mental health organizations, faith groups, and government offices.
Here are just a handful of impact findings we have gathered for our past initiatives:
In 2022, 65% of our audiences reported that the Earth Day film increasing their knowledge of climate grief with 96.6% stating they will take further action.
In 2023, we had a total of 249 screenings, and engagement by 7,333 audience members. One audience member shared this impact with us: “Thank you, miigwech. This is powerful. I'm going to cry (again) when this is shown to the students. I think it's ok to see the sorrow, grief and loss for the trees. We will move into action - a letter - and discussion on using recycled paper products (or sustainable substitutes) to lessen our dependence on trees and the importance of trees as carbon sinks as we face climate breakdown.“
In 2024, 85% of those surveyed indicated the film was very successful at raising awareness of the effect of resource extraction on Indigenous communities, and 96.5% indicated they would take action on the issue.
2025 83% of surveyees increased their knowledge of food rescue and 96% indicating they would take action on this issue.
